I willfully avoided the Russell Brand hype machine last year, when the notorious Brit comedian descended upon U.S. soil in bit parts in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bedtime Stories, and created a minor uproar when not only was he selected to host the MTV Video Music Awards, but then he had the gall to make fun of the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings.  Anyway, he seemed interesting enough with his fabulous hair and the ex-drug addict stories and all, but I never went so far as to seek out his comedy.

Until last night, when I turned on Comedy Central and caught his new hour-long special, which starred this amazing sexually ambiguous leather-clad character with a penchant for promoting his penis and had no problem theatrically exposing his personal failings for the point of a laugh. It was the most refreshing piece of stand-up I’d seen in a while, and I begrudgingly acknowledge that MTV got it right (Really though, who could see that coming?).

Check out clips of Brand’s Comedy Central special here (DO IT) buy his bestselling autobiography My Booky Wook on sale starting tomorrow in the U.S., or if you’re in NY, go see him on Thursday at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom. If you want to take him a present, I hear condoms are good.

Here’s Brand making a prank phone call on the The Graham Norton Show.  SEXSEXSEXSEXSEX:
